The European Union, EU Film Festival is back, bigger, bolder, and more intentional this year.
With the theme “Reimagine Africa: Storytelling for Transformation,” the festival is using film as a tool for social change, and giving young Nigerian filmmakers a platform to tell their own stories, in their own voices.
The EU Film Festival 2026, tagged “Films For Social Change,” has opened in Abuja with a renewed commitment to creativity, youth empowerment, and cultural collaboration between Europe and Africa.
The festival, now in its third year, has grown from a modest showcase into a nationwide movement, screening films across Kaduna, Enugu, and now Abuja for its grand finale.
Speaking at the opening, the Head of the Political, Press and Information Section of the EU Delegation to Nigeria said he was struck by the strength of Nigeria’s creative industry.
He described Nollywood as a world-class industry, and said the EU is keen to strengthen its partnership with Nigeria, not just in film, but in the wider creative economy.
He added that film is more than entertainment. It is a vehicle for dialogue, for understanding, and for social transformation.
That message was echoed by the organisers of the festival, who say the impact is already visible in the lives of young participants.
Over the past three years, young people who attended the festival have left inspired, many going on to make their own films.
This year, young filmmakers were challenged to produce films in just three minutes, a task organisers describe as difficult, demanding, and deeply rewarding.
The festival features screenings, masterclasses, panel discussions, and conversations on how African stories can reshape perceptions, challenge stereotypes, and drive social change.
For the EU, the goal is clear: to support a new generation of storytellers who can reimagine Africa for the world.
