The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has warned that failure to prosecute electoral offenders poses a serious threat to credible elections in Nigeria, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Commission’s Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu, SAN, said the continued impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of electoral offences could further undermine the country’s electoral process.
Ojukwu stated this in Abuja while receiving a delegation of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), led by its head, Leonardo Simao.
He noted that electoral violations are often carried out by agents of influential politicians, making it difficult to hold their sponsors accountable.
The NHRC chief also expressed concern over the failure to implement recommendations of the Justice Mohammed Uwais Electoral Reform Committee, particularly the establishment of a dedicated framework for prosecuting electoral offences.
Ojukwu disclosed that the Commission was developing advisories to guide political actors, security agencies, and government officials on their conduct during election campaigns and the protection of citizens’ rights.
He also highlighted concerns over inflammatory political statements, threats and restrictions on civic participation, and warning that such actions could undermine a level playing field.
In his remarks, Simao stressed the need for political campaigns to comply with the law and prioritise the protection of human lives and the prevention of electoral violence.
He reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Nigerian institutions in ensuring peaceful elections, urging the NHRC to sustain its efforts towards protecting human rights and promoting democratic stability.
