The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has raised concerns about political tensions, electoral violence and threats to democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group questioned state-imposed permit fees for campaign billboards, citing charges of up to ₦200 million in Abia; ₦150 million in Enugu, Kogi and Cross River; ₦75 million in Rivers; ₦50 million in Anambra; and ₦40 million in Benue.

It warned that the fees disadvantage opposition parties and restrict competition.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, the Situation Room noted INEC’s report that the voter register had exceeded 103 million following registration and verification.

The group urged INEC to publish a verification report before the register’s certification on December 15, 2026.

The coalition also highlighted risks from AI-generated content, deepfakes, election disinformation and statements fabricated to manipulate opinion and undermine trust in election management.

It called for transparency in election management, protection of voting rights, access to polling units for persons with disabilities, inclusion of women and youth, and clarification of safeguards for transmitting results electronically.
