Nigeria’s Flamingos have emerged champions of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after a historic 2-1 victory over Japan in the final in Morocco.
The triumph marks Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
The Flamingos overcame a determined Japanese side in the final at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in salé to write their names into the history books.
Nigeria’s previous best finish at the tournament was third place at the 2022 edition in India.
But the Hakeem Busari-tutored side went one step further this time, completing a remarkable journey to the title.
The Flamingos recovered from a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening group match to defeat Puerto Rico and defending champions Korea DPR to reach the round of 16.
The African champions then saw off Mexico and Venezuela before a commanding 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals booked their place in the final.
And in the final hurdle, the Flamingos delivered when it mattered most, defeating Japan 2-1 to claim the ultimate prize.
From a difficult start to the tournament to a historic finish, the Flamingos have now conquered the world and given Nigerian women’s football another moment of glory to celebrate.
