2023 Election : US Embassy spokesperson says Nigerian media up to the task

The United States Embassy says its commitment to the growth of Nigeria’s democracy through a vibrant and responsible media remains resolute.

The U.S Press Attache, Jeanne Clark said this in Abuja at a meeting with the Group Managing Director of Daar Communications PLC, Tony Akiotu.

The Embassy Spokesperson said the Nigerian media has done well in its efforts to sustain the plurality of Nigeria’s diversity, and that as the general elections draw closer, the media will be counted upon to play its constitutionally-assigned role.

Clark added that a collaboration with the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE in organizing a series of workshop for very senior journalists in the six geopolitical zones, which commences later this month in Yola, the Adamawa state capital, is one of several ways the embassy supports the Nigerian media’s capacity development.

With a similar political system being run between both countries, the quality of resource persons for the training seminars will be very useful to participants.

She also said the United States embassy is capable of assissting DAAR Communications, especially in its technical procurement through participation in Trade Shows in the United States facilitated by the embassy’s Commercial Section of the embassy for desirous Nigerian businesses and companies.

The DAAR Group Managing Director, Tony Akiotu recalled the excellent working relationship the media conglomerate has had with the U.S embassy in Nigeria, and stressed that the DAAR wll always promote the unity of the country, while uplifting broadcast standards, especially during elections.

He pledged DAAR Communications commitment to supporting the activities of the U.S embassy in its programmes on various platforms of the DAAR group.
