The Federal Government Says it is targeting to hold national census on April 2023 after the general election, slated for February and March 2023.
But the National Population Commission will conduct Pilot Census in June this year after the political parties primary elections.
The last time the country conducted census was in August 2006.
The Director General of Nigeria Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa-Kwarra, said this at the end of the Council of State meeting, chaired by President Muhammedu Buhari.
The NPC boss said that the commission will deploy high technology in conduct of the National Census.
He noted that through census, data is generated for planning, noting also that the data currently being used are mere projections and obsolete.

The Jigawa State Governor, Abubakar Badaru, on his part disclosed that Buhari will meet security chiefs on Tuesday next week over worsening security situation following recommendations and comments by council of state.
On the hike in food price, The Jigawa governor said the President promised to raise the issue with security Cheifs On Tuesday and ensure that farmers increase their production.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, said the Council of State approved 159 out of 162 applications presented for consideration for perogative of mercy for convicts and inmates in correctional centers.
The council also according to the minister of Special Duties, George Akume, approved the conferment of National Honours Award on 434 Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in the various field of endeavours.
