There was pandemonium at Okigwe Road in the Imo state capital Owerri on Monday evening as pedestrians and motorists around the office of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) scampered for safety following sporadic gunshots fired.
The gunshots were said to have been fired by men of the Nigeria Police during an attack on the State Commandant of the Civil Defence Corps, Michael Ogar.
Briefing newsmen on the development, Ogar said the attack was in connection with an earlier incident where a man, Nonso Ezenwanne, who claimed to be a Policeman, was detained in possession of multiple Identity cards.
Ogar explained that his personnel had an altercation with Ezenwanne following the disruption of his motorcade while returning from the scene of the inferno at an illegal oil bunkering site in the state last Sunday.
According to Oga two of his men suffered bullet injuries and are receiving treatment in hospital while his official car and some exhibits parked around the office vicinity were damaged.
Oga expressed disappointment by the action of the police team described as ” MOPOL 18,” adding that the detained man was also taken away by the attackers during the incident.
Efforts to get the reaction of the state Police Command were unsuccessful as the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mike Abattam is yet to respond to calls or messages.
