Hate Speech

Cross River State House of Assembly says it will not domesticate any laws that will provide death sentence on any Nigerians using of social media in the name of hate speech, describing it as anti-human and unacceptable.

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Eteng Williams, made this known on the sideline of the Bridge Leadership Foundation programme to develop youths which held in Calabar, the state capital.

He said contemplating new media law in the name of curtailing hate speech is replicating of an existing law of libel and defamation, saying the new proposed bill is extreme and will not get the support of the Cross River State Assembly.

On their part, the Deputy Governor of Cross River, Ivara Esu and former Governor, Liyel Imoke, said quality education and employment opportunities will solve most of the problems facing the youths rather than going to the extreme in the name of law.

The Hate Speech Prohibition Bill, which is sponsored by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, a lawmaker of the ruling All Progressives Congress from Niger State, has generated widely condemnations and rejections across the country.
