INEC Chairman Mamudu Yakubu

In a move that may not be unconnected with the perceived partisanship of the Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu has announced that sensitive materials for the forthcoming Ekiti governorship election will not be housed with the CBN.

Fielding questions from Nigerians at “the Electorate; a conversation on elections in Nigeria”, the INEC boss explained that the commission is testing its capacity to independently manage election materials.

He explained that the materials would be distributed to INEC offices in the state from the Akure Airport.

Also at the hybrid event held in Abuja, Yakubu however said that the case would be different at the national level for the 2023 general elections.

Meanwhile, INEC has approved the request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to carry out investigation into finances of the 18 political parties in the country. The probe by the anti-graft agency will also cover presidential aspirants who purchased nomination forms with the 18 political parties.
