The Federal Government has released a circular on the 65 years retirement age or 40 years of service for teachers as approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The circular dated June 23, 2022 and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, David Adejo, said the approval is for all education officers, irrespective of posting, while emphasising chalk-to-hand teachers.

The circular which did not state if it is applied to teachers at both federal and states levels adds that henceforth, there will no longer be boundaries in the implementation of the harmonised policy for education officers and teachers.

The circular however, reminded that those not interested in the elongation can apply for retirement, in line with extant public service rules.

The circular reads that the document supercedes earlier releases.

Meanwhile, non-teaching staff in primary and secondary schools have picked holes in the policy, which did not capture non-academic staff, describing it as discriminatory.

General Secretary of the Non-academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, Peters Adeyemi told AIT.live via telephone that government needs to explain further what the circular means by education officers, because non-teaching staff by extention should be Education Officers.

Adeyemi queries why the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu has remained evasive on the demand of non-teaching staff.
