The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata has said the retirement of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad may not be unconnected to the Vote of No Confidence passed on him by 14 other justices of the Supreme Court.
The 14 justices of the Supreme court had in a leaked letter jointly signed by them accused Tanko of running the affairs of the apex court as his personal property and denying them of their allowances.
In a statement issued on Monday, Akpata said there is an urgent need to reform the judiciary and restore the almost dissipated confidence Nigerians have in the Judiciary as it can be said that the level of public confidence in the legal profession is currently at an all-time-low.
The NBA President welcomed the appointment of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the 18th Chief Justice of Nigeria following the resignation of Justice Tanko Mohammad on Monday.
He pledged the readiness of the body of lawyers to work with Justice Ariwoola to address
the ills plaguing not just the judiciary but the entire legal profession.
The NBA President prayed for the speedy recovery and a life of peaceful retirement for Justice Tanko Mohammed.
