After 136 days of strike by the Academic Staff Union Of Universities, with no end in sight, the Committee of Vice-chancellors of 217 Nigerian Universities, wants President Muhammadu Buhari to take over the talks, to end the impasse.

The Chairman of the committee and Vice-chancellor, Niger Delta University, Samuel Edoumiekumo, made the call in Abuja, at the Public Presentation of A Model Intellectual Property Policy Document, in conjunction with the Nigerian Copyright Commission.

Barely 24 hours after the organised labour in Nigeria resolved to hold a one-day nationwide protest over the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Committee of Vice-chancellors of over 217 universities, is asking President Mohammadu Buhari to take a stronger stance, to end the action.

The vice-chancellors, led by the V.C of Niger Delta University, Samuel Ediumiekumo, want classrooms reopened as most policies remain inactive without students’ participation.

Following reports of patent theft and plagiarism, the vice-chancellors have developed a model intellectual property policy document, to check the crime.

While the vice-chancellors seek an end to strikes by university-based unions, they insist that institutions must continue to embrace initiatives which encourage the attainment of global best practices in education at all levels.
