Gambia’s Omar Alieu Touray will be unveiled as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission at the Accra summit of Heads of State and Government on Sunday. He replaces the Ivorian, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, who has been in charge for the past four years.
Nigeria will be represented at the summit by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.
The regional leaders are also expected to elect a new rotational Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority to succeed Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, who has served for almost two years.
Touray will be heading the seven-commissioner secretariat in Abuja, which has been reformed down from the wasteful 15-member structure.
Expectations will be on how the new management will tackle the critical challenges facing the 15-nation sub-regional bloc with three member-states including Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso under military rule.
