The bill to establish the society of Nigeria broadcasters gained huge boost on Thursday as the house of representatives committee on information considered the proposed legislation during a public hearing .
Experts in the broadcasting industry present at the hearing except the national broadcasting commission unanimously supported the bill emphasising that the proposed legislation will promote professional competence among media practitioners.
The bill to provide for the regulation and conduct of the practice of broadcasting profession in Nigeria is a proposed legislation intended to curb several vices in the broadcasting world,particularly setting standards for professional broadcasters in the country.
Media professionals present at the hearing further highlighted the importance of repositioning the broadcast media .
Expectedly,the national broadcasting commission was a loner in its opinion,arguing that it’s unwise to have to regulatory bodies governing the industry but a veteran broadcaster was quick to dispel the claims by the NBC.
The piece of legislation aside from establishing a broadcasting practitioners’ council will also be responsible for formal admission, certification, and registration of persons seeking to become broadcasters.
