Muslim – Muslim Ticket : Bayelsa Clerics express divided views

Clerics in Bayelsa State are divided over the decision of Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress to fly a Muslim/ Muslim ticket in the forthcoming presidential election.

Reacting to the issue in Yenagoa, some held the view that the step taken by the APC could create tensions and deepen suspicions amongst people of different faith in the country while others say it is high time citizens concentrated on the capacity of those vying for public offices rather than on their religion.

The decision of the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, to nominate former Borno State Governor and fellow Muslim, Kashim Shettima as running mate has continued to generate heated reactions nationwide.

Many clerics of the Christian faith in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State are unhappy over the move, including Pastor Godspower Asingba of the Overcoming Lamb Assembly who says it would widen distrust and heighten religious tension.

But the Chief Imam of Bayelsa State, Abusufiyan Uche looks at the issue differently, describing it as more of a political situation than religious, adding that emphasis should dwell more on candidates who can rescue the country from its current deplorable condition.

While many Nigerians have suggested that the country is not ripe for a same faith presidential ticket, Tinubu has insisted that Shettima is the man needed by his side to get the job done.
