The Catholic Bishop of Lokoja Diocese, Most Reverend Martins Olunrumonu has called on the federal government to seek fresh ideas on how to handle the challenges of insecurity in the country with places of worship now targets of bandits.

Speaking at the Diocesan security summit of the Catholic Diocese of Lokoja following the recent abduction of some of its priests, Bishop Martins said it appears the Nigerian government is helpless and needs to seek assistance to tackle the security breaches in the country.

Bishop Olunrumonu challenged priests to always be on alert as they have become ready targets for kidnappers

He said the abduction of its priests, the recent being Reverend Father Christopher Ohutu from the mission in Obangede as well as other security breaches in places of worship in Nigeria informed the need for the summit.

With poverty and bad economic situations seen as some of the push factors for crimes in the society, Diocesan Chancellor, Reverend Father Augustine Okafor, urged the government to create employment opportunities for the idle, but energetic youths.

With the theme: navigating contemporary security challenges of our time, the summit had resource persons drawn from the Department of State Services and other security agencies who provided security tips for personal and parish based emergencies
