Chairman of Zamfara State Football Association in North-West Nigeria, Ibrahim Gusau has emerged as the President of Nigeria Football Federation, NFF in an election saw many contestants stepping down.

Gusau, who is the Chairman of State Football Associations Chairmen, garnered 39 votes to replace Amaju Pinnick for the next four years.

The process of electing Gusau was however not without anxious moments. In the first round of voting, Gusau polled 21 votes, defeating former NFF First Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi who polled 12 votes, with the outgoing Second Vice President, Shehu Dikko securing 6 votes, while Abba Yola and Idah Peterside clinched one vote each.

Gusau needed one more vote according to the NFF Electoral Law, which created the need for a run-off to determine the winner.

Closest rival, Akinwunmi and other contestants still in the race stepped down, except Idah who insisted on the run-off taking place, despite appeals from Pinnick and former Secretary General, Christopher Green.

But, just as the process was about to commence, Idah had a change of mind, which the electoral officials considered to be too late, insisting the run-off must get to its logical conclusion according to the NFF Statutes.

Gusau was this time emphatic in the second round as he polled 39 votes against Idah who got only one vote.
