The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU in the University of Calabar says, the death of about ten of its colleagues was a result of the lack of money to buy drugs.
It says the “no work, no pay” policy of the Federal Government, has led to the avoidable death of the lecturers.
The Chairman of the Unical Chapter of ASUU, John Edor, made this known during an interview with AIT’s Rasheed Olanrewaju in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The union chairman, however, said members have resorted to contributions for their ailing colleagues, rather than paying for their burial, saying their support for the strike is total until government answers them in full.

Governor Ben Ayade had said that the state’s Executive Council has approved some funds recently for the lecturers, in both the state and federal universities in Cross River, a development the Vice Chancellor applauded, and called for fruitful negotiations between the union and the government.
University lecturers have been on strike for eight months, following the inability of the Federal Government to fulfil the 2009 agreement reached, for the growth and development of the public university system in Nigeria.
