Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari has released six inmates on death row and commuted the sentences of nine others to life imprisonment.

This is contained in a statement by the State Correctional Service Public Relations Officer, ASC Najibullah Idris who said one of the inmates on death row will now spend 30 years in jail.

According to the statement, the gesture is to mark the celebration of the country’s Independence Day anniversary as well as the overbearing need to decongest custodial centres across the state.

The Assistant Controller General of Corrections in charge of Zone B comprising of Katsina, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna, ACG Usman Abubakar acting upon the directives of the Controller-General of Corrections, Halliru Nababa, released the inmates who were granted pardon by the State Governor.

The statement further added that, the Controller of Katsina State Command of Corrections, Abdulmumin Haruna, applauded the State Government for the kind gesture and appealed to court judges and magistrates to make use of non-custodial measures in reducing the over populated facilities in the state.

This according to him, will enable the Service to perform its statutory duties of reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates back to the society as law abiding citizens.
