Ramaphosa wins ANC leadership contest

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has been re-elected as the leader of the ruling African National Congress, ANC.

The seventy-year-old defeated his former Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize by 2,476 votes to 1,897.

Ramaphosa will lead the ANC into the 2024 elections and despite his victory at party level, the president may still be investigated by police, tax and Finacial authorities and bank over allegations that he stashed at least $580,000 in a sofa at his private farm, and then covered up theft of the cash.

Though a report by a panel found him culpable, the president has continued to deny any wrongdoing, while launching legal action to annul the report.

The ANC used its parliamentary majority to vote down the findings of the panel, even though some members of his party voted with the opposition in an attempt to trigger impeachment proceedings.

Ramaphosa’s challenger for the ANC leadership, Mkhize was the health minister under Ramaphosa’s government but resigned last year over allegations he misused COVID-19 funds

The former minister has also denied any wrongdoing,
