The President-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndi’gbo Worldwide, Professor George Obiozor is dead.
The Governor of Imo state, where Obiozor hails from, Hope Uzodinma, confirmed Professor Obiozor’s death in a statement released late Wednesday.
He wrote, “On behalf of the government and people of Imo state, I, Sen Hope Uzodimma, the Executive Governor of Imo state, sorrowfuly announce the passage of a great Son of Imo state and Nigeria, the President General of ohanaeze Ndigbo, worldwide, Prof George Obiozor’.
Uzodinma described Professor Obiozor as an exceptional diplomat and statesman and a tenacious patriot, saluting him on “his profound intellectual contributions and wise counsel on national and global issues”.

The statement says the burial announcement will be made known by the family.
Born on August 15, 1942, Professor Obiozor served in different diplomatic positions. He was Nigeria’s ambassador to Israel between 1999 to 2003 and Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States from 2004 to 2008. He was also one time Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Cyprus.
Before then, he was the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.
In 2021, he was elected President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, helping steer the body at a time of heightened separatist agitation in the south east.
Earlier in March 2022, his country home in Awo-Omamma, Oru East local government of Imo state was set ablaze – an action that drew heavy condemnation from leaders of the region
