The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State has faulted the resumption of a criminal trial of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and APC governorship candidate, Tonye Cole in Court over the sale of state assets by the Rivers state government.

The Rivers State Government on Thursday filed fresh criminal charges against Amaechi and Cole for the alleged sale of State assets and withdrawal of N96 billion from the State’s treasury when Rotimi Amaechi was governor of Rivers State.

spokesperson for the Party, Sogbeye Eli, who stated this while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt on Friday said the move was to stop the APC governorship candidate after multiple cases contrived to disqualify him and other candidates for the 2023 general elections failed.

Describing the resumed trial as an effort in futility, Sogbeye Eli noted that it was only orchestrated to cause further distractions to Tonye Cole, the APC, and Rivers voters after a withdrawal last year due to lack of evidence of police reports.

Eli further described the reports as mere allegations that had no legal evidence and challenged Governor Nyesom Wike to publish details of the accounts held by the Rivers State Government in various Banks before Amaechi’s departure from office on May 29, 2015, to highlight the alleged withdrawal.

He further advised the state government to deploy the funds it would spend on the alleged ill-conceived trial in rehabilitating the deteriorated state secretariat and paying civil servants and pensioners welfare, assuring that the wild goose chase will be an effort in futility.
