Currency Redesign: Gov. Wike reacts to CBN policy on withdrawal

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has condemned the new currency design as well as the accompanying policy limiting the amount Nigerians can withdraw from their banks; saying that the policy has been designed to bring untold hardship to Nigerians

Contrary to claims in some quarters, Governor Wike says the new policy is not about politicians, fighting corruption, or vote buying; but an anti-people policy that will bring about more suffering in the country.

Speaking at a PDP rally in Okrika Local Government Area, Governor Wike wants President Buhari who will be leaving office in a few months’ time to have a second thoughts about the policy, as it’s also capable of worsening the security situation in Nigeria.

Buoyed by the support from the people who are happy with the wonderful work Governor Nyesom Wike has done over the last seven and a half years, the Rivers State PDP campaign trail on Thursday made a stop in Okrika Local Government Area of the state.

In a local government area that has been a stronghold of the PDP since 1999, the people demonstrated this fact in 2019 when they strongly resisted military men who had come to hijack their votes.

The Wike administration has, on its part, repaid its loyalty with projects and various empowerment programs.

Thursday’s rally saw proud sons and daughters of the Wakrike nation led by their traditional rulers pour out in their numbers to pledge their votes to the Governorship candidate of the PDP Sim Fubara and other State and National Assembly candidates.

Not mentioning any name, Governor Nyesom Wike says any presidential candidate who thinks he can do without Rivers State will fail in their quest.

But, the Governor is more disturbed by the recent currency re-design and the harsh withdrawal policy that has come with it.

He says the policy is only aimed at worsening the hardship being suffered by the majority of Nigerians.

The Governor says all those behind the anti-people policy do not mean well for the president and the country.

The Rivers State Governor is therefore pleading with President Muhammadu Buhari to have a second thoughts about the policy as it will only plunge the country into more crisis.

He also wants the President to see his last few months in office as an opportunity to do something good for the majority of Nigerians going through a lot of hardship.
