The Supreme Court has fixed February 22, 2023, to hear the suit filed by some state governments, challenging aspects of the Naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN).

Bayelsa and Edo states are also seeking to join the Federal Government as co-defendants in the suit.

Also seeking to join the suit are Lagos, Katsina, Cross-River, Ogun, Ekiti and Ondo States.

Three states, Kogi, Kaduna, and Zamfara were the original plaintiffs.

The original plaintiffs and the new states seeking to join were all represented in court this Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the previous interim order on the extension of the old Naira notes as legal tender beyond 10th February 2023 subsists.

In a motion ex parte filed before the Supreme Court, Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara represented by Abdulhakeem Mustapha had prayed to the court to grant an interim injunction, stopping the CBN from ending the timeframe within which the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes will cease to be legal tender.

On February 8, the court restrained the apex bank from giving effect to the February 10 deadline.

The Federal Government had filed a preliminary objection to the suit, arguing that the Supreme Court lacked the requisite jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

Governor of Kogi, Yahaya Bello and his Kaduna State counterpart, Nasir Elrufai were physically present in court this Wednesday.
