Environmental Protection: Bauchi State Gets $2m As World Bank Intervention

Over Forty-five flood and erosion-affected communities from the twenty local government areas of Bauchi State, are to benefit from the Two million US dollar ACReSAL Project; a World Bank-assisted project.

Governor Bala Mohammed said the project is part of his administration’s efforts, to provide lasting solution to the lingering flood disaster and environmental challenges in the state.

Different groups, ranging from traditional rulers, relevant government ministries, and the benefiting communities, under the Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi-arid Landscapes, ACReSAL, Project we’re at the event.

It is a World Bank-assisted four-day stakeholder’s engagement, on the implementation of the project in the state.

Seven communities have been selected to benefit from the first phase of the projects.

They are in the areas of flood and erosion control, water supply and agricultural activities among others.

According to Governor Bala Mohammed, Bauchi is identified as one of the states being devastated by flood disasters, and other environmental challenges and the two million U S dollars of the World Bank intervention, after the payment of the five hundred million Naira counterpart fund, will assist in addressing the menace.

The state’s Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Hamisu Shira, the Director General of Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency, BASEPA, Dr Ibrahim Kabir who doubles as the project coordinator of the programme in Bauchi State, commended Governor Bala Mohammed, for the prompt payment of the counterpart fund, which qualified the state to benefit from the project, and appealed to the benefiting communities to support the gesture.

The ACReSAL Project prioritizing actions are in four components of dryland management, community climate resilience, institutional strengthening, project management and contingent emergency response.
