As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, the African Action Congress, AAC, has called for what it describes as a “second independence” from poverty, corruption, insecurity and economic injustice.
In a statement marking the anniversary, the party said Nigeria’s independence should go beyond ceremonies and patriotic speeches to improvements in the living conditions of citizens.
The AAC called for better access to food, jobs, education, healthcare and security, as well as improved wages for workers.
The party also advocated greater accountability in governance, democratic control of national resources and what it described as a people centred economy.
It urged Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process, organise around issues affecting their communities and demand accountability from those in public office.
