A new framework on migration that prioritises the safety and dignity of African citizens has been canvassed.
At a high-level dialogue in Abuja convened by the African Diaspora Group, stakeholders called on governments across the continent to rethink their migration policies.
Thousands of African youths risk crossing the desert and the Mediterranean Sea to Europe annually in a desperate attempt to escape poverty, a journey where many fall victim to smugglers and human traffickers.
Others face increasing xenophobic attacks in fellow African country, South Africa.
The African Diaspora Union says the African Union must now take decisive action to protect the dignity of African citizens wherever they reside.
The dialogue, which brought together envoys of several African countries, lawmakers and members of diaspora organisations, also urged governments to prioritise good governance and job creation to retain African youths at home, where their energy and skills are most needed.
The dialogue is expected to move beyond the conference hall to direct engagements with the authorities of the most affected countries.
