Hundreds of women have protested in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, demanding stronger security measures ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The protesters raised concerns over reported political violence, killings and alleged police intimidation, warning that residents must be able to participate in the election without fear.
The killing of a 14-year-old boy in Ilobu, and 29 others are among incidents that have heightened concerns over political violence ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
With five days to the vote, hundreds of women marched through Osogbo, demanding greater protection for residents.
They also raised allegations of police intimidation and called for security agencies to remain neutral.
The protesters said political competition must not cost lives, urging President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police to intervene.
Receiving them, Commissioner of Police on election duty, Samuel Etaifo, said adequate security measures were in place and their concerns would be presented to the Inspector-General of Police.
The women also urged INEC and election observers to closely monitor the process and safeguard voters.
