More than 600,000 patients accessed treatment last year at public and private health facilities in Akwa Ibom State, South-South Nigeria in the last one year. This is seen as increased access to healthcare.

Akwa Ibom state Commissioner for Health, Ekem John, who said this at a media briefing in Uyo, confirmed that over N690 million was paid to partner health facilities of the state health insurance scheme during the same period.

John said the development reflects improved healthcare infrastructure, wider coverage and increased utilisation of the state’s health insurance scheme.

The Commissioner also attributed the state’s declining mortality rate to sustained interventions by the Governor Umo Eno administration, including the provision of modern medical equipment and improved healthcare services.

He said the state has also recorded progress in the fight against HIV and teenage pregnancy. According to him, HIV prevalence dropped from 6.5 to 4.3 percent, while teenage pregnancy prevalence declined from 19 to 8 percent.
