Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, says recent calls for the reinstatement of petrol subsidy are being driven by those who benefited from the scheme while it lasted.

Speaking during an interactive session on Federal Government economic reforms with All Progressives Congress correspondents in Abuja, Alake said the present administration should be commended for ending the petrol subsidy regime, arguing that the policy is yielding economic benefits.

The removal of petrol subsidy remains a knotty issue in Nigeria’s economic debate.

The reason for the continuing public debate is not far-fetched. Nigerians have faced rising living costs, with higher petrol prices contributing to increased transportation and other costs.

But the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, insists that removing the subsidy was the best option for an economy he says was heading towards serious difficulties.

Alake, who is also Director of Strategic Communications for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, urged critics to focus less on the composition of the campaign council and more on its agenda and the government’s programmes.

Alake also called for maturity, responsibility and credibility from the Nigerian media during campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
