The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has rejected FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, saying the political arrangement could threaten the party’s unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party also defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to have Vice President Kashim Shettima represent him at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Imo APC says its priority ahead of 2027 is strengthening the party’s structures and keeping members united behind APC candidates.
It joins other APC voices opposed to the Rainbow Coalition associated with Nyesom Wike, describing the political initiative as an arrangement that could pose a threat to the party’s unity.
Wike, however, maintains that the coalition is a multi-party platform mobilising support for President Tinubu’s re-election and is not intended to weaken the APC.
The Imo chapter reaffirmed its commitment to the party’s unity, particularly in the state, as well as reconciliation efforts by the national leadership.
It says members remain focused on consolidating party structures and mobilising voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party also called for sustained campaigns against electoral malpractice and violence before, during and after the elections.
On the United Nations General Assembly, the Imo APC dismissed opposition criticism of President Tinubu’s decision to have Vice President Kashim Shettima represent him in New York.
The chapter says Nigeria’s agenda being presented by the Vice President is in the interest of the country.
The Imo APC says coordinated efforts are already underway to strengthen internal unity and mobilise support for the party and its candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
