The Action Peoples Party, APP, has described the Osun State governorship election as a victory for democracy, saying its conduct should set a benchmark for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The party commended INEC, President Bola Tinubu, security agencies and the people of Osun State, while urging Governor Ademola Adeleke to govern beyond political affiliations.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, APP National Chairman Uchenna Nnadi said the significance of the election went beyond the victory or defeat of any candidate or political party.
He said the real test was whether voters were able to freely determine who governed them and have their votes counted.
The APP commended INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, saying the conduct of the election demonstrated the importance of independence and integrity in electoral management.
The party also praised President Bola Tinubu for what it described as providing a level playing field and allowing the electoral process to proceed without improper federal interference.
Nnadi also commended the Police, Army, Department of State Services and other security agencies for securing the election, saying credible polls require an environment where voters and electoral officials can operate without intimidation.
The APP congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his victory but urged him to govern all residents of Osun State, irrespective of their political affiliations.
The party, however, cautioned against regarding the election as flawless and called on INEC to conduct a comprehensive post-election review of logistics, voter accreditation, collation, results management and the deployment of technology.
It says lessons from the Osun election should be used to strengthen preparations for the 2027 general elections.
