A deadly attack in Awka, the Anambra State capital by suspected cultists has left at least two persons dead and several with gunshot injuries.
The communities of Aymom na Okpala and Amaenyi in the Awka suburb were thrown into pandemonium Sunday night when the armed gunmen stormed their neighbourhoods shooting sporadically and targeting any human in sight.
Local residents say the gunmen who operated in a silver coloured Corolla car, first struck at public social areas of Aymom na Okpala community where they brutally shot dead a man, while another was gunned down at the Amaenyi area of Awka.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attacks in a Press statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, early Monday.
SP Ikenga condemned the gunshot attacks by the yet-to-be identified heavily armed gunmen.
The Police Command statement indicates that operatives have recovered the bodies of the victims and were taken to the hospital where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel.
He stated that while one of the victims is yet to be identified, the second victim has been identified as Isaac Nwosu, a popular Master of Ceremony and comedian in Anambra State, who is well known as Azia.
Ikenga noted that the Police command is on the trail of the three suspected assailants upon receiving the distress information, urging residents not to hesitate to provide timely information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators and preventing further attacks.
