The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS, Nigeria, has expressed concern over the country’s worsening security situation, describing it as a major threat to education.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s National Administrative Council, NAC and National Executive Committee, NEC meeting held in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, South-West Nigeria.
Reading the communiqué, ASUSS National President, Sola Adigun, called for the establishment of a Special Schools Protection Squad, SSPS to safeguard schools across the country. He noted that criminals increasingly see educational institutions as soft targets for attacks.
The union also appealed to government at all levels to intensify efforts to secure the release of victims of abduction who are still in captivity.

ASUSS further urged the government to tackle illegal mining, stressing that removing children from mining sites would return them to classrooms and improve access to education in affected communities.
In her keynote address, the Ekiti State Head of Service, Folakemi Olomojobi, urged teachers across Nigeria to embrace a change in mindset by restoring dignity, reclaiming the value of the teaching profession, and redefining the status of teachers in the education sector.
