The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai, IBBUL, has proceeded on a total and indefinite strike with immediate effect after an emergency congress.

This follows the expiration of an earlier 2-week ultimatum handed down to the Niger State government over continued non-implementation of all critical components of the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement.

Chairperson of the Union, Galadima Bala, said they took the painful decision after exhausting several avenues of dialogue and engagement with the relevant authorities and key stakeholders without satisfactory implementation of the agreement and resolution of issues at stake.

According to the Union, in the past, the Niger State Government has always shown commitment as the first to implement national agreements but has not done so since after about 16 state universities implemented this agreement.

Bala added that the ASUU IBBUL remains committed and open to genuine, meaningful and result-oriented dialogue and constructive engagement.

However, the patience of our members is not infinite adding that, the industrial action can be brought to an end as soon as there is demonstrable commitment and concrete actions in the implementation of the agreement.

The union therefore said it regrets any inconvenience this action may cause students, parents and other stakeholders stressing that the union believes the responsibility of restoring industrial harmony rests on the urgent resolution of the issues that necessitated the strike action.
