The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has again warned the Federal Government of Nigeria against re-opening of its tertiary institutions, claiming it will lead to a spike of COVID-19.

The Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of the union, Professor Ade Adejumo, disclosed this while briefing reporters at the University of Ilorin noted that reopening Nigeria’s higher institution of learning at this critical time is dangerous as the there s no adequate preparation on the path of the Government at all levels.

Adejumo, however, stressed that the COVID-19 pandemic has not only exposed Nigeria‘s ill-preparedness for any form of challenges but has also justified ASUU’s persistent calls for proper funding of the education and research activities as genuine drivers of national development.

He advised the Federal Government to make adequate and necessary safety provision in Nigeria’s public schools before they are re-opened.

On the ongoing strike of the union, Adejumo maintained that the Federal Government has not shown any sign of finding a lasting solution to the lingering crisis, adding that ASUU members will not resume until their demands are duly met.
