Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Port Harcourt Chapter, have appealed to the Federal Government to constitute a governing council for the smooth running of the institution.
They made the call during a peaceful protest in the school’s premise in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The placards carrying members of ASUU led by its chairman, Austen Sado, wondered why the Federal Government constituted the governing council of thirteen other Federal Universities, leaving out the University of Port Harcourt.

Sado said its demand is based on the University Autonomy Act which stipulates that once a governing council is dissolved, another council shall almost immediately be constituted as if the council were not dissolved ab initio.
