The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) chapter has suspended its over one-month-old strike.
Chairman of the ASUU NSUK Chapter, Dr. Zubairu Abdulmumini Loko disclosed this in a telephone conversation with AIT.
Dr. Loko said the strike was suspended conditionally, pending the implementation of a number of agreements reached with the university’s Governing Council aimed at resolving the lecturers’ grievances.
According to him, the Governing Council has directed the university management to pay one month’s arrears of lecturers’ allowances before the end of September. The council is also expected to persuade the state governor to pay at least two additional months’ arrears before the end of his tenure.
He added that the meeting with the university’s Governing Council resolved that the Nasarawa State Government should immediately take over the payment of pensions to reduce the financial burden on the university.
He noted that the meeting also agreed that the state government should engage with the Nasarawa State House of Assembly to facilitate the passage of the pension counterpart fund, among other demands.
Loko said that following the suspension of the strike, lecturers are expected to resume academic activities immediately in the interest of the educational development of the state.
The ASUU NSUK chapter also appreciated the individuals and organisations that intervened in the dispute, describing their efforts as patriotic and instrumental to the suspension of the strike.
It will be recalled that the ASUU NSUK chapter last month suspended all academic activities over a wide range of disputes, including seven months’ arrears of the Federal Government/ASUU 2025 agreement, known as the CATA allowance.
The allowance is intended to support academic staff with professional teaching and research-related expenses.
