Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep sadness over the death of elder statesman and businessman, Alhaji Bamanga Muhammad Tukur, the Tafidan Adamawa.
In a statement on Sunday, the Vice President described the passing of the former Governor of old Gongola State and ex-National Chairman of the PDP, who died on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at age 90, as a monumental loss to Nigeria and Africa.
Senator Shettima said Tukur was a true patriot, a global citizen and an institution in his own right.
Paying tribute, the Vice President recalled Tukur’s impact as General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982, when he cleared the infamous cement armada gridlock and built the Tin Can Island Port Complex while modernising Apapa, Warri, Calabar and other ports.
He also noted Tukur’s service as Governor of old Gongola State, Minister for Industries, and PDP National Chairman between 2012 and 2014. The VP said beyond Nigeria, Tukur was a pan-African voice who, as founder of the African Business Roundtable, championed intra-African trade — ideas that later blossomed into the AfCFTA.
Senator Shettima extended condolences to the Tukur family, the Adamawa State Government and the people of Fombina Emirate.
He prayed that Almighty Allah grants the late elder statesman Aljannatul Firdaus and gives the family the fortitude to bear the loss.
The Vice President said Nigeria will never forget the legacy of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who died just three days to his 91st birthday.
