As Nigeria marks another Independence anniversary, concerns over the country’s pdevelopment, governance and the welfare of citizens have come into focus.
The President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention has criticised the state of the country’s development, expressing concern that politicians are already focusing on the 2027 General elections while Nigerians continue to grapple with economic and social challenges.
He made the remarks at an Independence Day conference, where he called on political leaders, Christians and citizens to embrace responsible leadership and active citizenship.

He challenged the Church to resist the pressure to conform to changing societal values at the expense of its principles, stressing the need for Christ-centred leadership, meaningful public engagement and a commitment to transforming society.
As Nigeria reflects on its independence journey, the call is for leadership that prioritises citizens’ welfare and a citizenry willing to demand accountability and contribute to nation-building.
