Basketball stakeholders are calling for greater investment in grassroots development to create more opportunities for young Nigerians to discover and develop their talents.
The call was made at a Coaches Clinic in Gombe State, where attention focused on strengthening coaching, mentoring and player development.
For many young Nigerians, basketball offers more than competition, providing opportunities for education, discipline, employment and international exposure.
But stakeholders say discovering talent is only the beginning, as young players also require access to courts, academies, qualified coaches and regular competitions to reach their potential.
At the Coaches Clinic organised by the Amateur Basketball Academies, participants focused on what organisers describe as the “Triple Threats” of effective coaching, competence, character and commitment.
Organisers say coaches must go beyond teaching basketball skills to serving as mentors, role models and builders of character.
Stakeholders believe Nigeria’s ability to compete more strongly in basketball will depend on sustained investment at the grassroots and greater collaboration among government, schools, private organisations and communities.
They say expanding opportunities for young players could produce a stronger generation of basketball talents while equipping young people with confidence, discipline and leadership skills.
