Police have presented welfare cheques worth N39.9 million to families of police officers in Akwa-Ibom State, South-South Nigeria who died in active service.
Akwa-Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, said the gesture is aimed at honouring the sacrifices of the fallen officers.
Fifty-one families and next-of-kin of deceased police officers have benefited from the welfare intervention.
Presenting the cheques on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, CP Azare said the support was a demonstration that the Nigeria Police Force has not forgotten the sacrifices of officers who paid the supreme price in service.
The CP expressed sympathy to the beneficiaries on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP. He acknowledged that no financial assistance could replace the lives lost, but urged the families to use the funds judiciously, particularly for the education and upkeep of their children and dependants.
