The Bida Local Government Council in Niger State has halted production at ice cream facilities over hygiene concerns and the operators’ failure to provide the required licences and NAFDAC registration numbers.
The action followed an inspection by the council’s environmental health officials.
At a production facility near the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, inspectors reported finding flies in the mixture used to make ice cream.

The products also had no labels identifying their contents or source.
The council said tests on substances used in production raised further health concerns. However, details of the substances identified and the test results were not provided.
According to the council, the facility’s managers acknowledged operating without the required licences and registration with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.
Officials halted production and removed equipment and related materials from the premises.
The inspection followed complaints from residents that vendors gathered at the facility each morning to buy ice cream for sale across Bida.

The Supervisory Councillor for Health and Social Welfare, Ahmed Danladi, said the enforcement action was intended to protect residents and ensure that food and drinks were produced under hygienic conditions.
He said the council would take action against operators who breached public health and environmental regulations.

Danladi also urged residents to report suspected unsafe food production and distribution practices to the appropriate authorities.
