The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria, BON, has inaugurated six ad-hoc Committees to drive reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s broadcast industry through innovation, capacity building, policy advocacy and sustainability.

The Chairman of the Organisation, Tony Akiotu, at the inauguration disclosed that the Committees are expected to serve as strategic platforms for collaboration among Chief Executives, broadcast professionals and industry veterans, with the goal of delivering practical solutions to challenges confronting the sector.

Speaking shortly after his inauguration into the Sports Rights, Investment and Commercial Committee, Head of Sports at Africa Independent Television, AIT, Omofuma Ebare, decried that despite Nigeria’s rich sporting heritage, many local broadcasters remain unable to acquire rights to major global sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup.

He described the situation as unacceptable and said the Committee would work to develop sustainable investment models and commercial partnerships that would enable Nigerian broadcasters compete for premium sports rights and expand access to other major international competitions.

The entire lifespan of the Committees is 12 calendar months from inauguration; subject to extension based on the exigencies of work, project or proposal yet undone.

The inaugurated Committees are – Content Collaboration, Programming and Innovation; Training, Skills Modernisation and Talent Development; Industry Sustainability and Cost Optimisation; Digital Transition, Regulation and NBC Engagement; Policy Advocacy, Stakeholder Engagement and National Development; and Sports Rights, Investment and Commercial Committees.
