The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA is calling for better welfare, safer hospitals, competitive pay and digital innovation to retain skilled doctors and improve healthcare delivery.
The call comes amid concerns over difficult working conditions, burnout and the growing migration of Nigerian doctors in search of better opportunities abroad.
The message formed part of activities marking the 2026 Physicians’ Week, with the association insisting that protecting doctors is critical to protecting patients.
With the theme, “Securing the Future of Medicine in Nigeria,” the NMA says improving doctors’ welfare and working conditions must be a priority.
It also wants stronger collaboration with Nigerian doctors in the diaspora to support research, investment and knowledge-sharing, even when they cannot return permanently.
The association says the sector requires updated curricula, investment in teaching hospitals and stronger research capacity, alongside ethical safeguards to protect patients’ privacy and prevent technology from deepening existing inequalities.
