The Federal Government has withdrawn the circular directing Pro-Chancellors and Vice Chancellors to reopen public universities, in compliance with the order of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria asking striking lecturers to return to the classrooms.
The withdrawal dated September 26, 2022 is signed by the same Director of Finance and Accounts of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Sam Onazi who signed the initial directive on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Professor Abdulrasheed Abubakar.
It will be recalled that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige dragged the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria over their refusal to suspend the lecturers strike which started on February 14, 2022.
