In less than two weeks after four police officers on duty were killed by unknown gunmen along Idungdung Checkpoint in the Calabar Municipality Area Council, the Police have confirmed the killing of another two in Obubra, by suspected Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) Irene Igbo, two rifles were also taken away by the criminals.

One of the officers is said to be lying critically injured at an undisclosed medical facility.

Ugbo said, based on the information gathered, the killers were shouting IPOB slogans when they approached the checkpoint before they opened fire on the policemen.

She said they made attempt to burn down Nko Police Station but were repelled by the police operatives on duty.

Unconfirmed reports say, military checkpoint along the Obubra highway was also attacked by the suspected IPOB members, where one of the soldiers was killed.

Some sections of the media had reported that six policemen were gunned down by the criminals, but police authority said only two of their personnel were killed during the attack.

Security situation seems to have taken another dimension in Cross River State, with the continuous killings and taking away the riffles of police officers on duty.

The PPRO said, the Police Commissioner, Sikiru Akande, has deployed mobile policemen to comb the affected areas.
