The Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom narrowly escaped being assassinated by yet-to-be-identified gunmen suspected to be herders, who reportedly ambushed him on his farm along Makurdi-Gboko road within Makurdi metropolis.
According to the chief executive at about 11 am Saturday the gunmen who were about 15 in number dressed in black started shooting sporadically at his convoy.
Governor Ortom was forced to flee for his life for approximately a kilometre before his security aides were able to repel the assailants.

The Chief security officer of the State has therefore initiated a petition against the Miyetti Allah Katau hore socio cultural organisation at whose instance he suspects the attack was carried out.
It will be recalled that the socio cultural organisation had met in Yola the Adamawa State capital and demanded amongst others, that the State Governor repeals the anti open grazing law which is perceived to be against the group who are herders.
