The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has confirmed Nigerian football administrator, Samson Adamu as its new substantive General Secretary, giving him the responsibility of overseeing the day-to-day administration of the continent’s football governing body.
Adamu’s appointment was approved by the CAF Executive Committee following a comprehensive recruitment process, having served in an acting capacity since March 2026.
CAF President, Patrice Motsepe said the recruitment exercise involved a widely advertised vacancy and interviews with several candidates before the organisation settled on Adamu for the strategic position.
The appointment represents a significant milestone in Adamu’s career in football administration, having built extensive experience within CAF since joining the organisation in 2018 as Director of Competitions.
He subsequently served as Director of Tournaments and Events, playing key roles in the organisation and delivery of major continental football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, which is CAF’s flagship tournament.
His experience in managing competitions and events has given him considerable institutional knowledge of CAF’s operations, administrative structures and tournament delivery requirements.
Adamu is also a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, an internationally recognised course designed to develop expertise in the management and administration of sport.
In his new role, the Nigerian will oversee CAF’s daily administrative operations and support the implementation of its strategic priorities, working within the organisation’s leadership structure to advance the development and administration of football across Africa.
His confirmation comes at a time when African football continues to pursue improvements in competition organisation, governance and the global standing of the game.
For Nigeria, Adamu’s appointment places a Nigerian administrator in one of the most influential executive positions within African football’s governing body.
His experience across competitions, tournaments and events is expected to be central to his responsibilities as he takes on the role on a substantive basis.
