Canada has increased the amount of money international students must show when applying for a study permit. The new financial requirement takes effect on September 1, 2026.
In a post on X on Friday, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, IRCC announced that a single student applying from outside Quebec will now be required to show C$23,448 for living expenses. This is up from C$22,895 an increase of C$553, or about 2.4%.
The financial requirement is separate from tuition fees and transportation costs.
Applicants must also demonstrate sufficient funds to cover expenses for themselves and any accompanying family members. The new amounts are:
- C$35,888 for 3 people
- C$49,419 for 5 people
- C$62,054 for 6 people
- C$6,318 for each additional family member beyond 7
IRCC stated that these amounts are reviewed annually to reflect changes in the cost of living in Canada. The department noted that the requirements are intended to protect international students from financial hardship and exploitation.
For study programmes lasting more than one year, applicants must also explain how they intend to finance their studies for the full duration of the programme.
